I have had several careers in my adult life, intelligence analyst, martial arts instructor, and author. The one thread running through all was the opportunity to create, present, and interact with others during workshops. It is a passion of mine and I’m thrilled to continue it with these discussion groups and writing workshops.
The importance of Inclusion and Empathy is an interactive discussion and workshop based on the novel List of Ten. Participants and I will discuss what it means to read stories about mental illness and individuality, as well as the craft behind writing them. They will have opportunities to participate both verbally and in writing. This workshop is to be used with the educator's discussion guide and is perfect for classes and clubs that have read List of Ten.
Grades 8 - 12, teen and adult book clubs
45 - 60 minutes. Includes question and answer session.
Writing what you know is one of the most common pieces of advice writers are given. But what exactly does that mean? In this workshop, we will examine aspects of our lives to inspire storylines, characters, and settings. Participants will have the opportunity to write short scenes based on prompts, and collaborate on an idea or storyline.
This workshop is great for all ages.

“Mrs. Gomez is a very thoughtful instructor who consistently puts her best foot forward to ensure every student has the best learning experience. Her lessons are engaging, useful, and practical and her passion is reflected in her teaching. Mrs. Gomez is very motivating, patient and supportive with everyone in class. She has an amazing way of breaking things down so that they are understandable, and she is always able to keep the classes both informative and fun. As a high school student, I feel comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone since Mrs. Gomez always makes me feel safe. She provides valuable feedback which has helped me get better and improved my confidence.” – Audrey B. high school junior, Charlotte, NC
“Mrs. Gomez was a fantastic teacher when our family was training for our black belt degrees in martial arts. She was a positive role model and a constant encouragement to us for 4 years. Her energy, focus, and care for others shined through when she taught her students. She went over and beyond to make sure we understood creative forms and pushed us to be our best selves. It was an honor to be in her classes over the years and her leadership is something my family will always be grateful for.” Mrs. D. Peele, teacher, Rock Rest Elementary School, Monroe, NC
